Infinity Scarf Crochet
The scarf can be worn with one end pulled through the other, or draped once or twice around the neck, as shown below (purple scarf).
I also provide directions for a shorter, cowl neck version further on in the article (shown in title above).

Easy To Add Variety To Your Scarf Desgin
I have made SO MANY of these scarves over the years. They are quick and easy, yet so versatile and comfy. Change up the look by doing any of the following:
change the length (cowl vs long scarf)
alternate sections or rows of color
use variegated yarn
crochet only the back loop on each row to achieve a “ribbed” effect
use different types of yarn (larger, super soft and chunky - or smaller, with fun and fuzzy fibers)
add rows of another stitch, such as single crochet
SCARF SIZES
Longer Scarf
My longer scarves varied, but tended to be approximately 5.5” wide by 70” long BEFORE ends are stitched together to create a loop.
Folded over, with ends stitched together, my scarf measured 35”.
Short Version
My short version measures approximately 5.5” x 40” BEFORE ends are stitched together to create a loop.
When folded and ends are stitched together, it measures approximately 5.5” x 19”.
SUPPLIES
YARN
I have used various sizes and weights of yarn. Medium weight (worsted weight) yarns are thought of as “all purpose” and work well for scarves. I have also used bulky weight.
I LOVE all the textures and colors of yarn that are available.
Yarn: Longer Version
I have used several types of yarns for my longer version. The amount of yarn you will need depends on the weight of the yarn. I used 1 skein of 4 oz. yarn for my cross over scarf; it measured 34” in total length. This scarf is twice the length, so I would plan on 2 skeins.
Yarn: Short Version
I used Caron Latte Cakes, by Yarnspirations. The yarn ball is 8.8 oz, and 530 yards. One ball was enough for this small scarf. I didn’t actually change yarn color; it was a variegated yarn.
I simply place the scarf over my head. It falls into a nice, cowl type scarf. Warm and soft. I have received many compliments on it.
I can change placement of colors (purple hidden in back, or center front) - it’s like wearing a different scarf.
Crochet Hook
I use size J or K for my scarves. Instructions say size G to H can work well, but I tend to crochet TIGHT so I use J or K - even for these smaller yarns. Use what works best for you - the important thing is to obtain the correct overall width and length. You can do that by using larger yarn, larger hook, or adding stitches to width, or adding rows.
General Directions - Long Scarf
Change the hook, number of stitches, and number of rows to fit your yarn and desired size.
The following directions are for a scarf I made using Flutterby Chunky by James Brent.
As stated above, I tend to crochet a bit tight, so I use size K hook for slightly heavier yarn, and size J for worsted weight.
Row 1: chain 20, turn. Then chain 3 more to be your first DC (double crochet) in row 2.
NOTE: Add or decrease DC stitches if you are not happy with the width.
Row 2: DC in the 4th chain from the hook. DC across 19 more for a total of 20 DC (including the first that was created with chain of 3).
Rows 3 on: Repeat to 98 rows of 20 DC.
NOTE: Remember, you can add number of stitches to each row, and you can change the number of rows. It all depends on what width and length you desire.
Add Ribbed Effect
To make “ribbing”, pick up only the BACK loop on each row.
Finish Your Scarf
Once you are finished, TEST THE LENGTH. Fold the scarf over once and place it around your neck. If it is not long enough, continue to add rows.
Once you are happy with the length, whip stitch or sc (single crochet) the ends together.
Gifting Your Scarf
I have made several as gifts, per request. I always include a card that gives information on the yarn used, such as washing instructions and type of yarn. I use only acrylic or nylon / acrylic due to allergies that are common with wools.
I also include information on how to use the scarf. You are welcome to print the information I created, or use it as a sample. A friend asked for a scarf to be used as an arm sling, so that is included as well. It suited her needs.

General Directions - Short Scarf
Follow the directions for the longer scarf, except stop when the scarf measures 40” in length. When folded over, with ends stitched together, it will measure approximately 19”.
Change the length to suit your needs.
