Quick & Easy!
The only stitches used in this table round are chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet.
Because the yarn is bulky, and the hook is large, the piece goes together quickly.
Abbreviations for crochet stitches:
I am not showing how to create these stitches. There are numerous, very good YouTube videos on beginning crochet.
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
ch: chain
The first chain(s) on a new row counts as a stitch (1 ch = sc; 2 ch = dc).
Round
This project is worked in a round. This means that each row is a new round, and is created by increasing stitches (more stitches than the previous round). When a round is completed, slip stitch into the beginning of that round. ch-1 or ch-2 as specified to start the next round. A round may ask you to slip stitch into an open space before making that first stitch of new row. This is because the stitches of the new row are made in open spaces (chains) of the previous row.
Table Round Size
My cream colored finished piece measures 10” diameter. My green round (different type of yarn, but same hook size) measures just a bit over 10” diameter. If you stop after row 2, you will have a nice coaster.
SUPPLIES
YARN
BULKY YARN
I chose Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick for the round shown in the title photo. It is 6 oz. weight, 82 percent acrylic, 10 percent wool, and 8 percent rayon. It is a very nice yarn to work with. I used “Oatmeal” color.
For the green round, I chose Yarn Bee Effortless Super Bulky, in Mossy Acre color.
After using both yarns, I definitely prefer the Lion Brand yarn. That is just my personal preference - both yarns are nice.
Crochet Hook
The yarn calls for a size N hook; that is what I used.
NOTE: gauge is not important in this piece. Use the hook that works best for your choose. If you use a lighter weight yarn, or smaller hook, your finished size will be smaller. You could add rows (remember to increase in each new row).
Tapestry Needle
I use a bent needle to weave my ends in. I prefer bent because I can easily work the yarn tail into stitches. Use a straight tapestry needle if that is your preference.
General Directions
Start with a Magic Circle. This creates a loop that all stitches of the first row will be made into, plus it creates the first stitch in the circle. If you do not know how to create a magic circle, Google search it or look on YouTube. There are many great demos.
To start a new round, chain 1 to create a sc stitch on the new row; chain 2 to become a dc on the new row.
Row 1
sc-ch 1, ten times in the circle (remember that the first chain in circle counts as first sc). Total 10 sc, and 10 chains.
Sl st to the beginning sc. sl st to the next ch space of row 1.
ch 2 to count as the first dc of round 2 (you need to slip stitch over to the open chain space because row 2 double crochets are made only in the open chain spaces).
Total 20 stitches (10 sc and 10 ch).
Row 2
2 dc-ch 1 in each chain 1 space of row 1. sl st to beginning.
Total 30 stitches (20 dc and 10 chains).
The following photo shows rows 1 and 2 completed. At this point, the size is perfect for a coaster.
Row 3
sl st into a ch of row 2. ch 2 (this counts as first dc). 3dc -ch1 in each ch space around. sl st to beginning.
Total 40 stitches.
Row 4
ch 1 (this counts as first sc of row 4). sc in BACK LOOP ONLY of every stitch around. sl st to beginning.
Total 40 stitches.
NOTE: there is no increasing in this round.
Crocheting in the back loop only creates a nice ridge on the surface.
Row 5
ch 2 (this counts as first dc). dc-ch 1 in BACK LOOP ONLY of every stitch around. sl st to beginning.
Total 80 stitches.
Complete The Table Round
End off, leaving a 4”-5” tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave in the tail.
I created the following table round following almost the same directions, but with some variation. I am showing it because I like the color, and it was made with the Lion Brand yarn listed under supplies. The stitches are more distinct, creating a prettier piece. The green yarn is pretty, but a bit fuzzier, so the stitches are not as distinct.
Coasters & Placemats
If you stop after round 2, you will have a nice coaster.
If you add rows after row 5, you will can create a round placemat (or larger table centerpiece). Add as many rows as needed for the placemat size you need.
NOTE: you will need to INCREASE stitches as you add rows, because each circle (each row) becomes larger than the previous row. For row 5, I increased by one st in each of the previous row’s stitches (I did a dc-ch1 in EVERY stitch around). You will need to increase in all new rows that you add. If you begin to get “ruffles”, it means you are increasing too much. You could try increasing in only every other stitch.
Add Cozy Candles
On cold winter days, I love to light candles. They create a warm glow - very cozy.
The trunk shown in the following photo is from my Norwegian grandparents. My grandfather created the little 3-legged table in the style of furniture he grew up with in Norway. He used few tools - the legs fit into holes in the table top. The legs and edges of the table are rough-carved. I used to watch him carving with his knife when making furniture.
These pieces are precious to me, and I am so happy to be able to add my own hand-created items.
