Fragrant Lavender
I have always loved lavender. After moving from the desert Southwest to the Pacific Northwest, I went to work on my gardens. One of the first things I planted was lavender.
There are several varieties, and they are suited for varying soils, sun levels, and temperatures. Check with your local nursery for information on which varieties are suitable for your area.
The flowers bloom most of the summer. The bees love them - an added bonus in helping nature. The first image below is of my dish of lavender. Bees are busy in the next two photos. The fourth photo below is of a different variety - the flowers bloom much closer to the main bush.
When To Harvest Lavender
Most guides will tell you to harvest when flowers are the freshest. I didn’t cut any flowers at all in the summer. It is now almost October, and one of my lavender shrubs is about done blooming - definitely not at the “freshest” state. I decided to prune off the long stems of mostly spent flowers. I loved the scent! I decided to bring them inside for a nice bouquet in a vase. If you wish is to dry the lavender, you would bundle it into small batches and place the bundles in a dry area until thoroughly dried.
My lavender looked lovely - however, the dried flowers dropped little pieces and made quite a mess. I took the batch of stems outside and cut off the stems, leaving only the flower itself. The small floral pieces worked perfectly in a dish on my new end table.
Why That Didn’t Work

I turned a fallen tree disaster into a beautiful evergreen bouquet for my front porch. Easy! Use holiday items from your stash.
