Sewing Points
Familiarize yourself with sewing "points" before making this block (two triangles stitched together create the points). It is not difficult to create this block once you learn how to make "perfect points". Notice that the sharp ends of the points come to the edges of the finished block (when the blocks are sewn to connecting fabric pieces). Visit our free quilt lessons pages for more information.
Pattern
I created this quilt by using the pattern located on my Laced Star Placemat page. Visit that page for full instructions on creating the Laced Star Block. The number of blocks required, plus measurements of sashing and borders are listed below under “Blocks Required”.
For my quilt, I did not make the small stars. I only made the center laced star shown below.
Blocks Required
The size of my quilt is 7 blocks wide by 6 blocks long. I wanted the quilt to drape over the bed on the sides, far enough down to reach the bed skirt.
Each finished Laced Star block is 8” square. The sashing strips are 4” wide. The outer borders (2 sides, top and bottom of quilt) are also 4” wide.
I arranged the laced star blocks so that the stars “turn”, and the arrangement of blocks and sashing squares also creates “circles” where the star points meet the sashing.
Play around with it! It is fun to see what patterns you can come up with.
